Off Line: A Photo Essay of a Chef’s View of Life Outside of the Kitchen

The Line
In a restaurant, the kitchen is known as “the line.” When a chef leaves the line for any reason, the Sous Chef – or a kitchen lead – will slide into that position to run the kitchen in their absence. When I would need to leave my kitchen, I would turn to my staff and yell “Off Line!” In unison, everyone would respond, “Off Line!” to assure I was heard.

From 2015 to 2020 I spent little time outside the restaurant, but when I did I was either driving to Mendota to see Jill, my then wife-to-be, or taking advantage of full days and traveling with my kids. “Off Line” is a collection of photographs documenting my time in and out of the car from the Illinois Valley to Monument Valley and many places in between.

Off Line is my first ever photo essay exhibit, or “Une dégustation de photos”, if you will. I need to thank my wife Jill, who undoubtedly is my better half. It is because of Jill that I can be who I am. In every sense of the word.

Big shout out to Open Space Art Gallery for the opportunity to present my story.
